  • First turbine components for Wambo Wind Farm project delivered to site in the Western Downs

  • In total when complete, 83 turbines, 247m high will produce 506 MW energy – equivalent of powering 312,000 homes.

  • The multi-year build is creating over 400 jobs.

In a major milestone for the jointly owned Stanwell and Cubico Wambo Wind Farm project, the first turbine components have been delivered to site near Jandowae after a massive logistical transport operation on Monday night.

A super load test run of a blade for some of the largest onshore wind turbines in the country was conducted on Monday night, the first load leaving the Port of Brisbane at 10pm to travel overnight, limiting road disruptions. A second test run, carrying a base section of the wind turbine is schedule to take place in the next week following final road upgrades.

The convoys are accompanied by police and pilot vehicle escort to the Western Downs more than 300 kilometres away, with the first load arriving early Tuesday morning. Subject to final approvals, the project will now establish a regular delivery schedule which is expected to include two complete wind turbines each week.

Each turbine is made up of eight tower sections, three blades, nacelle, hub and drive train and will require thirteen loads in total to complete the trip from Port to home. Two of the tallest cranes in the country will then be used to erect the wind turbines on location. Being built over two stages, Wambo Wind Farm when complete will feature 83 wind turbines towering 247 metres in the air, producing more than 500 MW of clean energy, enough to power the equivalent of more than 300,000 homes.

The site in Diamondy, Western Downs was chosen for its excellent wind resources and grid connectivity.

Quotes attributable to Michael O’Rourke, CEO Stanwell

“The delivery of the first wind turbine components to the Wambo Wind Farm site is an exciting milestone for the project.

“Under this important partnership with global renewable powerhouse Cubico, Stanwell will own 50 per cent of the energy produced and we will purchase the rest of the power from Cubico under a 15-year agreement. “That brings us another 506 MW closer to Stanwell’s target of 9 to 10 GW of clean energy by 2025.”

“The arrival of these components means we are progressing well towards stage one of the project becoming operational next year, bringing online a total of 252MW, which is enough to power 165,000 homes,” he said. “Cubico and Stanwell recognise that these deliveries may cause inconvenience for some in the local community and along the route and do appreciate your patience and understanding.”
